The Healthy Mind Cookbook

The Healthy Mind Cookbook - review by Lavende&Lemonade

Did you know that eating broccoli can help boost verbal recall?  Or that avocado may keep depression at bay?

Those are the types of fun facts sprinkled throughout The Healthy Mind Cookbook by Rebecca Katz with Mat Edelson.  I LOVE learning about the foods that we eat and the effect they can have on our bodies, so this book review is right up my alley.

To summarize the authors' findings - add herbs and spices to everything!  Not only do they enhance flavors and give personality to dishes, but the are overflowing with brain-boosting compounds.  Like sage - which reportedly helped people score better on memory tests - and mint which has been found to help with clerical skills like typing!

The majority of this book features summer recipes filled with herbs, spices, fresh fruits and vegetables, and nuts.  The book's recipes appear to be complicated and long, but in most cases a huge proportion of the ingredients are simply spices that just take a second to add.  To get a feel for the caliber of the flavors, I made the Moroccan Chickpea & Vegetable Soup which I've shared with you on the blog!

I do wish that the authors went into more detail about the ingredients - not just providing fun facts - but actually explaining the studies behind them and a little more detail on just how founded they are.  Predominantly recipes, with a few pages dedicated to the long list of ingredients, the book doesn't leave room for much more than a tidbit per ingredient.  Which - pun absolutely intended - left me hungry for more.

I received this book for free from Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest opinions.

  1. The river intersects the two former cities of Buda and Pest, which makes the modern city a big area to get around, but transport options are endless. In fact, for a family, getting around is all part of the experience and you don't need to walk. Apartment in Budapest for rent
