Cut your Water Bill with this Simple Trick

Water comes so easily out of the faucet that it’s easy to take it for granted!  Just think of how much more careful we’d be with each drop if we had to walk to the nearest well or river to collect it.

There is a lot of water that goes down our kitchen drains that is barely even touched, if at all.  Think about the water used while we’re washing vegetables.  Or when we rinse something sticky of our fingers.  If we catch that water, it is perfect for the garden!

This simple trick saves money on the water bill and helps to conserve water as well.

I like to keep a plastic pail in our sink which I use to capture this “clean” water.  Then I hold the veggies, or my sticky hands, or whatever else is getting a light rinse, over the bucket and simple let the extra water fall into the pail.  When it gets filled up, I carry it to the garden and use it on my plants.  It’s a great solution that is hardly any effort at all for the savings…and a lighter conscience during our drought.

A few things to keep in mind:
  •     Avoid getting soap in the water.  A little bit isn’t harmful, but plants and the soil are better off without it.

  •    Try a narrow pail.  Mine is an oblong, and the shape gives me better access to the sink.

  •   Choose a pail with handles.  This makes it easier to carry the pail around the garden.

You’ll be amazed at how much water you capture!  On a busy day in the kitchen I catch about 5 gallons of water that my plants love and which would have otherwise have been wasted down the drain.

How much clean or nearly-clean water do you send down the drain each day?

  1. Wonderful advice! I like to do the same thing when I shower (at least, during the summer I do. I can never keep up with it during the cooler months) - capture the water in a bucket and use it to water my plants. I wish that I could convince others to do it as well because it seems like such a large amount of water simply vanishing when it could serve another purpose.

    1. I love that you "recycle" your water too! I've been thinking about doing the shower water as well but haven't been able to figure out a way to make sure it isn't all soapy. Do you have any tips?

    2. if you like to soak in the shower, do that last. Do all your soapy stuff first then close the drain for the rest of it. Then you can scoop or siphon out the water to where you want it to go.

  2. I catch my shower water while I'm waiting for the water to heat up, before I step in. I use that water to help fill up the washing machine for laundry. I plan on saving my kitchen water for my garden this spring. Thanks for the tips!

    1. Thanks so much! Once it becomes routine, its amazing how much water we can reuse. Half-filled glasses after dinner, water from rinsing fresh berries...its all perfect for the garden and would otherwise have gone to waste. I hope your family jumps in!

    1. Absolutely an option! If you don't have a garden, or if the water gets a little too soapy, using it to flush the toilet is a great idea. Thanks for the tip!

  5. We have 2 pails in the shower to capture the water. One shower fills both pails. The water to the toilet is shut off and we fill the back of the toilet with the shower water. Two pees per flush and of course flush each time one poops. We live in a desert so water is precious. Water barrels collect the little rain/snow that comes our way. Dishes are done once per day at the end of the evening and all water is collected from that to use in the garden or back of the toilet.
