Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream

We became absolutely addicted to Green Tea Ice Cream while living in Asia, and I'm thrilled to share with you this recipe to make it at home!

Making green tea ice cream at home couldn't be simpler!  It is so delicious - the perfect ending to a heavy meal - and is filled with all the great health benefits of Matcha Green Tea like:
  • 137 times more antioxidants than brewed green tea
  • High levels of L-Theanine which is said to have a calming yet energizing effect on the body
  • Detoxifying chlorophyll
This article from Shape Magazine explains that Green Tea has also been proven to increase metabolism, improve cholesterol, lower blood sugar, and possibly even improve brain function - interesting!

Matcha tea is finer than classic green tea because it comes from baby tea leaves that are grow in the shade, giving it a huge chlorophyll boost.  Its sort of like the Kobe Beef (the cows are massaged daily and eat a special diet with a little beer) of the tea world!

But let's be honest, we're not eating this ice cream for the health benefits but because of its addictively unique flavors.

MATCHA GREEN TEA ICE CREAM

INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup cream
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 Tablespoons Organic Matcha Green Tea

DIRECTIONS:

REMEMBER to put the bowl to your ice cream machine in the freezer the night before you want to make homemade ice cream!

1) In a saucepan over medium heat warm the milk, cream, and sugar.

2) Once it has heated, sprinkle in the matcha tea and whisk it into the milk in a diagonal motion.

I can't honestly say that the diagonal motion makes an impact, but that is how matcha is traditionally prepared so it feels more authentic to do it that way :)

3)  Stir the matcha-milk continuously until it begins to foam up.  Then remove the pan from the heat and let it cool.  It should be at least room-temperature, or could even go into the fridge to cool more, before you put it into the ice cream machine.

4)  Pour the mixture into your machine and let it churn for 15-20 minutes, according to the machine's instructions.

5)  When the churning is complete, spoon the ice cream into another container and put it into the freezer to harden.  It should stay in the freezer for a couple of hours before serving.

Enjoy!
