I'm always looking to learn more about what we eat. What are the ingredients? What vitamins are in it? Where is it grown? How is it made? What are the health benefits...or side-effects...to it?
I have visited a LOT of Dairies and Cheese Producers across the country for exactly that reason. It is so interesting to learn how all our dairy products are made! I especially love to learn about the families and farms that are behind the products in our refrigerators and pantries -- One glance at my humble little vegetable garden reminds me just how much work family farmers invest into stocking our shelves every day.
That is why I was so excited to learn more about the Rumiano Cheese Company, the oldest family-owned cheese company in California dating back four generations. The family immigrated from Italy in the 1930's with their cheese-making know-how, and have built their family farm into the first in the world to offer Non-GMO Verified cheese! That means that not only is the cheese itself organic, but the grass (They're all grass-fed) the Rumiano cows are eating is all verified as GMO-free!
The Rumiano family has their farm in Northern California, near the Oregon border, and receives its milk supply from independent third, fourth and fifth generation dairy farms all from within a 90-mile radius. I love that they know exactly where their cows are, what they're eating, and how to turn their milk into deliciously creamy Organic cheese.
I've sampled a variety of their cheeses and am happy to serve them as part of a cheese tray and in some great cheesy recipes that I'll be sharing over the coming weeks.
