Herbs, Herbs, Herbs

The New American Herbal is a beautiful reference for beginning kitchen gardeners, or for established gardeners looking to learn more about what could be growing.  As an amateur herb gardener and full-fledged foodie, this guide made me a very happy reader!

Stephen Orr's guide to everything herbs is a very informative overview of popular herb plants, their origins, how to grow them, and how to use them.  It is loaded with photos for easy learning and identification of the hundreds of different plants.  The book is full of herbs that I'd love to bring into our garden, like bay, French tarragon and .

The guide provides fresh information about popular herbs like basil and rosemary, as well as interesting introductions to topics like growing tarragon, the benefits of dill, and an introduction to stevia.  Not only does the Herbal provide tips on growing and identifying herbs from around the world, but also give practical ideas for using them.  Like recipes for cooking with fresh herbs - the Braised Chicken with Tarragon.

  1. This sounds like a great guide. I don't use a lot of herbs when cooking but now I might give it a try.

  2. I would love to get this book to help me grow some herbs. The only thing I was able to grow this year was Rosemary. There is nothing like the fragrant smell of fresh herbs.
